Educator, editor, author, amateur printer, and proponent of the private press, J. Ben Lieberman is widely regarded as the father of the twentieth-century chappel movement in the United States. The J. Ben Lieberman Papers reflect some of the accomplishments of J. Ben Lieberman and his wife Elizabeth Koller Lieberman.

His wife, Julia Dudkewitz McDowell (1923-2001), was a tracing clerk in the Reproduction Department, Design Division at E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company in the 1940s. This collection comprises letters exchanged by the serviceman and his spouse on the homefront in Delaware, on a nearly daily basis, during the period 1943-1945.
